Taiwan Biomaterial Co., Ltd. (TWBM) is a startup and spinoff from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the largest applied technology R&D institute in Taiwan. The core team has dedicated themselves in the field of implantable medical devices for more than 10 years. The key competency of the company is founded on the basis of the team’s long-term cooperation with physicians and surgeons to jointly identify clinically unmet needs. Based on the established needs, TWBM then integrates medical key opinion leaders, research team and industry manufacturer to proceed to develop a product through processes such as proof of concept, translational research, patent portfolio, GMP pilot manufacture, clinical trials as well as other related regulatory affairs, such as CE and FDA submission and clearances. TWBM focuses on the development of cutting-edge medical device, and not on establishments of mass production, branding and marketing. TWBM utilizes the same mode of operation called Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) which is identical to those innovative medical device startups to maximize and improve competitive position in company’s best interests.
President Alvin Lin is currently the Chairman and board director of TWBM. He is also CEO of Analog Integrations Corporation and ZUNIDATA Inc., and COO of Netronix Inc. Chairman Lin is experienced at the field of distinguished business management and decision-making strategy due to his rich industrial experiences.
Mr. Lu is currently the board director of TWBM. He received his Master degree in Industrial Engineering Department from the National Tsing Hua University. In the late 80's, he founded Cypress Technology Co., Ltd which engaged in the production and marketing of various innovative AV and multimedia products. Realizing the gradual weakening of market for traditional industries and being replaced by blooming electronics industry, he founded Netronix, a company that designs and manufactures network and e-Reader products. Mr. Lu then successfully led Netronix to be listed in OTC within five years.
Dr. Liao is the board director and CEO of TWBM since its establishment. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Material Engineering, Tatung University and did postdoctoral research at Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taiwan University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He holds over 15 years of experiences in the medical device product development field. His experiences in medical device development encompass many different fields, such as orthopedics, dentistry, and neurosurgery. He was also successfully licensed several Class II and Class III medical device products for domestic as well as international companies while he was in ITRI.
Mr. Liu is currently the board director of TWBM. He is also the founder and CEO of Baylite Opto-Electronics Technology Co., Ltd. With 25 years of experiences in manufacturing domestic fiber optic cables, his company mainly focuses on manufacturing of indoor fiber optic cables and digital audio transmission with plastic fiber-based cables. Under his leadership, Baylite Opto-Electronics Technology Co., Ltd is now well respected in the industry due to its rich experiences and expertise.
Mr. Ko is currently the board director of TWBM. He is also CEO of Yung Kang Medical Device Technology Co., Ltd. With rich industrial experiences, his company mainly focuses on manufacturing of medical device consumable supplies.
Min-Jen Chan is currently the Board Independent Director of TWBM; he is also CEO of Swancor Holding Co., Ltd. Min-Jen Chan was the partner of the KPMG Taiwan and KPMG advisory Taiwan focusing on auditing and advisory service to enhance the business performance for the enterprise.
Pan-Chang Yang is currently the Board Independent Director of TWBM. He received his B.S degree from the Department of Pharmacy, Taipei Medical University, and has the certificate of pharmacist. He had served as the Director of Marketing at Bristol Myers Squibb and Sino America Shanghai Squibb. He also had served as a Director of Operating at Biomedical Technology and DeviceResearch Laboratories (BDL) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and as Director of Medical affair at ADIMMUNE Corp. He is experienced at the field of marketing and sales of medical product and management of biotechnology industry over the years.
Shun-Te Lai is currently the Board Independent Director of TWBM. He is also the lecturer at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Kaohsiung Technology University. Prior to entering the academia field, he has acquired his extensive industrial experiences at HP Inc.
Dr. Liao is currently the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of TWBM. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Material Engineering, Tatung University and did postdoctoral research at Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taiwan University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He holds over 15 years of experiences in the medical device product development field. He joined the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan in 1999 and served as a Deputy Division Director at Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratories (BDL). His experiences in medical device development encompass many different fields, such as orthopedics, dentistry, and, neurosurgery. He was also successfully licensed several Class II and Class III medical device products for domestic as well as international companies while he was in ITRI. He has published over 30 research articles in different peer reviewed journals and 45 patents, and is a recipient of 14 prestigious research awards.
Dr. Chang is currently the Chief Science Officer of TWBM. He received his Ph.D. degree from Department of Chemical Engineering, National Tsing Hua University. He had served as researcher and as a Deputy Division Director at Industrial Technology Research Institute for over 12 years. He is an expert in the field of Biomaterials, Artificial blood, and Nano particles for drug delivery and as a contrast agent. He is a seasoned engineer and has rich experiences in terms of the development of the medical device design control process. Dr. Chang has also published over 10 articles and 6 patents.
Dr. Wang is currently the Director of Regulatory Affair of TWBM and is also one of the founding members of TWBM since its establishment. He received his Ph.D. degree from Institute of Biomedical Engineering, National Taiwan University. He served as researcher for over 5 years at Industrial Technology Research Institute. His expertise is mainly in the field of Biomaterials, and he participated in several product development projects including dentistry, orthopedics, and neurosurgery. He is also experienced and well-trained to handle the regulatory associated affairs, such as biocompatibility testing, animal study, and risk assessment. He has published over 7 research articles in different peer reviewed journals and 5 patents, and is a recipient of 3 research awards.
Dr. Chen is currently the Chief Operating Officer at the TWBM and is also one of the founding members of TWBM since its establishment. He received his Ph.D. degree from Institute of Business Administration, National Central University. He holds over 15 years of experiences in business development and served as the business manager at Biomedical Engineering Research Laboratory and the senior manager at Industrial Service Center of Industrial Technology Research Institute. He is a well-trained specialist in business affairs with outstanding records of performance achievement in business development in the biomedical field. Dr. Chen also possesses broad knowledge in business modeling and legal issues with abilities to deal and negotiate as well as perform market assessments and evaluations. He has a strong background in intellectual properties licensing, new venture planning, and executing total technology transfer conjointly with the commercialization process, and has published over 10 research articles in different peer reviewed journals and is a recipient of 6 prestigious awards.
Mr. Wang is the Chief Manufacturing Officer at the TWBM and is also one of the founding members of TWBM since its establishment. He received his M.S. degree from Institute of Biomedical Sciences, National Sun Yat-Sen University. He had served as an associate researcher for over 10 years at Biomedical Technology and Device Research Laboratories of Industrial Technology Research Institute. He has extensive experiences in the execution and management of GMP factory. Under his management, several products have received FDA clearance and CE certificates.
Michael Shin-San Michael Su, Ph.D. brings more than 20 years of organization, project management and scientific experience in the biotechnology industry. Most recently, from 2004 to 2006 he served as general director and vice president of the Biomedical Engineering Research Laboratory (BEL) at ITRI in Taiwan. Prior to that, he spent 14 years in a number of roles, concluding his tenure as program executive and vice president of the Novartis kinase collaboration for Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a publicly-traded a pharmaceutical company. Dr. Su earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry at Duke University and was a Helen Hay Whitney Fellow at Harvard University.
Dr. Sawhney, co-founder and a member of the board of directors of Incept LLC, is the founder, President and CEO of Ocular Therapeutix, Inc., Chairman and founder of Augmenix, Inc. He holds over 120 patents, which are the foundation for several novel medical devices effectively helping millions of patients worldwide. Dr. Sawhney received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He is the recipient of more than ten prestigious awards.
Mr. Khosravi, a Silicon Valley medical device entrepreneur, is the Managing Director and co-founder of Incept LLC. He has also co-founded twelve other medical companies and held senior management positions in several enterprises. He has received B.S. (cum laude) and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University. Mr. Khosravi has either authored or co-authored over 160 issued or filed patent applications involving unique and novel medical devices.
Dr. Lin is the president of Lin and Associates LLC, a global medical technology regulatory consulting firm. He has extensive practical experiences working as a reviewer for the United States Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA). He is an expert in relevant laws and regulations. Moreover, after his retirement from US-FDA, Dr. Lin has helped many Taiwanese medical device manufacturers to successfully enter the US market with his knowledge and experiences.
